Old Overisel Lumber Picture

Overisel Lumber Company has been bringing quality building materials to families along Michigan's lakeshore since television was invented back in 1925.

Quality Since The 1920's

In 1925, Overisel Feed and Lumber Co. was founded by John Voorhorst in Overisel, Michigan, which is a small community about four miles south west of Holland. Elvin Slenk started working for Overisel Feed and Lumber Co. as a bookkeeper and sales/designer in 1953. Five years later Gord Zuverink joined him in sales and design. That same year the original owner retired.

A New Partnership

In 1960, Elvin Slenk and Gord Zuverink took the bold step of purchasing the lumber yard part of the business and changed the name to Overisel Lumber Company. Five years later Elvin and Gord moved the company from Overisel to Holland on 32nd Street. Elvin bought out his partner, Gord, in 1980 to become sole owner of Overisel Lumber Company.

Branching Out

We opened our store in South Haven in 1974. Overisel Kitchen and Bath Center opened its doors for business in 1977. Then we expanded our company by purchasing a store in Douglas in 1985 on Chestnut Street. We are proud to have roots in so much of beautiful South West Michigan.

A New Generation

In 1992, Elvin retired from Overisel Lumber Company but remains part owner. His two sons, Tim and Greg, took the reigns. We moved the store in Holland from the original office, which still remains, and built a new, more spacious store in 1995. We eventually grew too large for our location in Douglas on Chestnut Street and moved to our current location on Blue Star Highway in 2001.

Sadly, in 2003, Tim Slenk passed away. Greg Slenk is the current owner, supported, of course, by the many long-term professional staff members that round out our Overisel Lumber family.

Today, Stronger Than Ever

Overisel Lumber Company remains a family owned and operated business. You will often meet Greg Slenk, with the newest generation, Jason and Lee Slenk, working hard in our stores and in the community. We are looking to a bright future building our community's dreams.
