Greg Slenk is an owner and manager at Overisel Lumber. At age 14 he started working for his dad, Elvin, painting the buildings and unloading railroad boxcars. Greg attended Holland High School and later went to Hope College to receive degrees in mathematics and education. Following three years of teaching in South Dakota and Wisconsin on Indian Reservations, he returned to work full time at Overisel in 1980.
Greg is married to his lovely wife Jeannie. They have two children daughter Katie and son Lee who are both a part of the Overisel team. Outside of work he loves spending time on the water, whether it is on the boat or at the beach. He also loves golfing and traveling in his spare time.
An organization that has special meaning to Greg is called Re-Member which is a non-profit, faith-based mission dedicated to the Lakota Sioux on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
Early in the Christmas season, Greg and a group of friends turn their efforts to those in need closer to home. Since the effort began in 1997, “Santa’s Elves” has sponsored more than 1,000 abused children, and has raised over $100,000 for Christian Neighbors.
Throughout his career at Overisel Lumber, Greg has managed all three stores in turn. His favorite part of his job is working with professional builders. “There’s nothing I like better than to get creative and solve problems with our builders,” shares Greg. “It is great to know that we are creating something that will house a family for years to come, or build a business that will provide a solid living for our neighbors in West Michigan.”
